Germany shoots swine in battle against AVP

3 February 2022 - Stef Wissink

German hunters shot nearly 2020 wild boars in the 2021/690.000 hunting season. Although there were nearly 200.000 fewer than a year earlier, that is the third highest number in a single season.

The German Hunters Association (DJV) points out that thinning out the wild boar stock is an important tool to slow down the spread of African swine fever (ASF) and calls on politicians for greater efforts to increase the number.

This could be done by reducing the bureaucracy surrounding the boar hunt and by having the government reimburse the costs of, for example, trichine research, which must be performed as standard on shot animals. The training of dogs that can be used in the search for animal carcasses could also be better financially supported.

Number of ASF cases is slightly declining
The number of boars that test positive for the ASF virus has decreased somewhat in recent months. In November a record number of 319 infected boars were found in Germany, in December and January 262 and 178 respectively. Still, there is not much reason for optimism: in several places the restricted areas have been expanded in recent months because infected animals were found outside the existing cordoned off zones.
