Pig company wants to move on, follow-up often unclear

18 February 2022 - Stef Wissink

A large part of the Dutch pig farmers would like to continue with their business. This is apparent from a survey among 700 pig farmers, conducted by AgriDirect.

In addition to the companies that want to continue the company unchanged (64%), about 21% are focusing on optimization and 12% on expanding the activities. Only 5% indicate that they want to gradually phase out the company. Of these, only just under 3% intend to transfer or sell the company in the near future.

Succession
Farmers over the age of 55 were asked whether a business successor was known. For 60% of the entrepreneurs asked, there is no business succession or it is still unclear whether there is a successor. In the other 40% there is a successor, in 17% he is part of the partnership of the company. The lack of business succession could, according to the survey results, lead to problems with the desire to continue the business.
