The European Commission is considering opening private storage for pork as one of the crisis measures surrounding the war in Ukraine. This is stated in a so-called 'non-paper', which has been submitted to the delegations from the Member States for investigation.
The paper does not say anything about possible aid amounts and the volume to be put into storage. The pig price has been low for some time and this has not improved due to the war in Ukraine (and everything that has moved as a result). On Tuesday, March 15, a senior DG Agri . official already indicated that the pig sector is the first to be helped.
In order to keep a closer eye on European food safety, it is proposed that from now on Member States also indicate which stocks of essential basic raw materials for 'food' and 'feed' are present at their disposal. A list of these raw materials has yet to be established.
Fallow land for grazing or protein-rich crops
In addition, the European Commission proposes to use fallow land again this year for, for example, grazing or the production of protein-rich crops. And she says she is also open to bringing forward European support funds for agricultural entrepreneurs, so that they can receive their allowances sooner.
Finally, the European Commission believes it is possible to provide additional support to certain regions or regional sectors if they have been disproportionately affected by the European sanctions against Russia, or if these sectors suffer greatly from indirect consequences.
