The pig market has come under pressure. The meat trade has clearly lost momentum and the supply is currently quite ample, measured by the available slaughter capacity.

After weeks of sharp increases for the pork parts, this development came to a halt last week. The cool weather and completed orders for Easter have slowed the meat trade somewhat. There are even big minuses being written this week. The hams had to surrender no less than € 0,17 per kilo. Prices for ribs, necks and shoulders were also between €0,06 and €0,10 per kilo lower. The whole carcass lost on average about €0,07 per kilo in value.

At the same time, the supply of pigs last week and this week is more extensive. With the disappointing meat trade and the canceled slaughter days in mind, the slaughterhouses are not in favor of extra pigs. More than 793.000 pigs were processed in Germany last week. That's about 10.000 more than a week earlier. The average slaughter weight decreased slightly by 0,2 kilos to 97,5 kilos.

The resulting price pressure is leading to falling prices in the Netherlands. Vion lowered the pig price on Monday (April 11) by €0,05 per kilo to €1,86 per kilo slaughtered weight (including VAT). Today (April 13) Compaxo follows with a minus of €0,05 per kilo of slaughtered weight to €1,61 per kilo of slaughtered weight (excluding VAT).

The VEZG quotation continues to cope with the pressure and keeps the quotation unchanged at €1,95 per kilo slaughtered weight. An attempt is made to maintain calm in the market, so that an unnecessary price decline is prevented. Tönnies and Vion Germany also keep the listing unchanged.
