Chinese meat import took off in March

With an import volume of 594.000 tons in March, a decrease of 42% is visible compared to the same month last year. That was a record volume at the time. No distinction is made per category, but you can assume that the decrease is mainly in pork. The rapid growth of the Chinese pig sector has reduced the need for imported meat.
Analysts expect import figures to decline further in the coming months. This is related to the lockdown in Shanghai, which is mainly the gateway for Brazilian meat. According to Reuters, a major Brazilian meat exporter has partially halted exports due to concerns that containers will not reach shore.
