Pig prices suffer damage

15 April 2022 - Wouter Baan

Pig prices recently went up like a rocket, but in the meantime the market has faded. The broken weeks and disappointing meat sales mean that Dutch prices are now suffering.

The pressure on the Dutch pig market is considerable, despite the fact that the German VEZG quotation was able to maintain its position at €1,95 per kilo. The Dutch slaughterhouse quotations appear to be less resilient. With two broken slaughter weeks (Easter and King's Day) ahead, slaughterhouses are given the opportunity to work on the quotations and this opportunity is not wasted. This is to the annoyance of many pig farmers and traders who will not have the market conditions on their side in the coming weeks.

Slaughter numbers are rising
Apart from the broken slaughter weeks, there is a growing supply in the Netherlands. Last week the slaughter figure rose to 316.000, the second highest number this year. The average slaughter weight of over 101 kilos is high, but stable. In Germany, too, the slaughter figures are higher than a few weeks ago, although they pale in comparison to the numbers achieved in other years. In the meantime, that is no longer news, but the new reality. Despite the (on paper) ample slaughter capacity, pigs in Germany are not necessarily easy to place.

Meat buyers have come to realize that the meat supply in Europe is wider than was presented during the price rally in March. Reluctance can be detected, especially from the retail sector, now that the Easter question has been filled in and has meanwhile also been delivered. We have to wait for new demand impulses that are weather dependent at this time of the year. The predicted beautiful spring weather will not lead to an increase in demand for the time being. Sales to China are at a low ebb.

Stock price down
Due to the decreased slaughterhouse quotations, the DCA Stock Price 2.0 awaits no other than a correction. Based on the statements at DCA Markets, the quotation drops from €0,06 to €1,72 per kilo. The price of live pigs also falls by €0,05 to €1,34 per kilo.
