Pressure on pig market has not increased

20 April 2022 - Stef Wissink

The pig market has clearly become more difficult in recent weeks. The range is quite extensive in terms of slaughter capacity. Traders indicate that it is a puzzle to place all the pigs. In the meantime, however, (meat) trade does not appear to have deteriorated further compared to last week. A positive signal?

The failure of two slaughter days and a simultaneously somewhat increased supply of animals ready for slaughter did not do the mood on the market any good. In the trade it should be noted that there are more than enough pigs available to meet the demand from the slaughterhouses. Not all pigs can be placed on time. Still, the mood in the market does not appear to have deteriorated further compared to last week, which can be regarded as a windfall.

Meat trade stabilizing
After pork component prices took a beating last week, price movements for this week seem to hint at a stabilization in the market. Although there are still modest minuses (-€0,02 per kilo) for hams and means, the changes are nothing compared to last week's minuses. It seems to be a signal that pork sales have not fallen further. The good weather may boost demand, although insiders in the meat trade also point out that significantly higher retail prices for meat can also have a negative effect on consumption.

The number of pigs slaughtered last week was very modest in Germany, partly as a result of Good Friday. In total, more than 655.000 pigs were processed with an average weight of 97,7 kilos. The average slaughter weight thus remained unchanged from last week. Last year, some 740.000 pigs were processed in the short slaughter weeks around Easter.

The German VEZG quotation remains unchanged at €1,95 per kilo slaughtered weight. The slaughterhouses Vion and Tönnies also score unchanged at the same level.
