The pig trade is still quite difficult. Not all animals ready for slaughter can be placed in time. A stabilizing meat trade seems to ensure that the market does not slide further.
Traders indicate that the pig trade has particularly hectic months. After a dramatic start in which pigs were very difficult to sell, the sky cleared completely in March and the supply of pigs was sometimes a bit on the tight side, partly because pigs were being held. Subsequently, the positive undertone quickly disappeared again, because at the moment it has been difficult to sell meat pigs ready for slaughter for weeks. Despite the historically tight supply there, there appears to be no demand boost from Germany.
Meat trade stabilizing
The fact that the market is not declining further despite the ample supply appears to be due to more peace in the meat trade. After a few weeks with negative changes for the various pork parts, some positives were even recorded again this week, as shown by the DCA mutations for pork parts. The pig carcass is gaining about €0,02 per kilo in value this week. The hope is that the demand for pork will receive a new boost in the coming period.
The pig supply in Germany remains historically small. Last week, influenced by the loss of slaughter capacity on Easter Monday, 671.642 pigs were slaughtered with an average weight of 98,0 kilos. The average slaughter weight therefore increases by 0,3 kilos compared to one week earlier.
The German VEZG quotation is €1,95 per kilo of slaughtered weight.
