Pork production in Germany shrinks almost 12%

The number of German pig slaughters fell by 10% in the first quarter. Due to the lower slaughter weights, pork production fell even faster.

A historic contraction of German pork production is therefore taking place. A total of 12,08 million pigs were processed by German slaughterhouses in the first quarter. The average slaughter weight of animals slaughtered in Germany fell by 1,7k kilos to 95,5 kilos, according to the Statistical Office in Germany. As a result, total pork production decreased by almost 12%, to 1,15 million tons.

Less import of pigs
The supply of animals ready for slaughter from abroad - after the decline one year earlier - now only slightly decreased. 305.000 foreign pigs were processed, which is 6.000 fewer than last year (-2%). In the first quarter of 2021, the number of imported pig slaughtered decreased by about 61% compared to the year before.
