Danish pig farming is now also shrinking sharply

12 May 2022 - Stef Wissink - 1 reaction

Whereas in our own country and neighboring countries the pig herd has been declining for a number of years, the Danish pig herd continued to show a slightly growing trend for a long time. However, the too low piglet and pig prices mean that the number of pigs in Denmark is now also falling sharply.

On April 1, 2022, there were 689.000 fewer pigs in Danish stables. The total number of pigs thus came to 12,47 million, a contraction of 5,2%. The number of pigs decreased in all animal categories. The number of fattening pigs shrank the most.

Shrink fattening pigs strongest
In April, 2,91 million finisher pigs were counted. A decrease of 7,0% compared to one year previously. The sharpest decline in the number of finishing pigs is probably due to the elimination of slaughter backlogs that arose in slaughterhouses last year due to the corona problem. The number of piglets up to 20 kilos decreased by 4,7% to a total of 2,57 million. The number of piglets and young finishers of 20 to 50 kilos decreased by 4,5% to a total of 5,77 million heads.

The number of sows is also declining rapidly. The total number of sows shrank by 74.000 head, or 5,8%, to a total of 1,19 million. The shrinking number of sows will most likely lead to a decline in piglet production in Denmark this year.
