Pigs that are ready for slaughter remain difficult to place

11 May 2022 - Stef Wissink - 2 comments

The pig market is still difficult. There are more than enough pigs ready for slaughter. In the pig trade, it should be noted that slaughterhouses have absolutely no interest in slaughtering more pigs than agreed, the numbers are even slightly reduced on a regular basis.

The mood in pigland seems to have fallen below freezing again. Despite the reduction in the purchase quotations, there is no additional interest in taking in pigs. Moreover, the 'extra' demand from German slaughterhouses in recent weeks, which increased the pressure at home, has disappeared again now that German pigs are again more favorably priced.

Dutch slaughterers also show no interest in extra animals, which means that the pig range cannot be fully classified. Sometimes slaughter plans are even adjusted slightly downwards. Partly due to defects in the slaughter line, but the unimaginative meat trade also plays a role in this. The parties therefore call the situation worrying in light of the ever-increasing costs for livestock farmers.

Meat trade does not start
The bad situation on the meat market seems to be the reason for the difficult pig trade. From this week's DCA movements (week 19) overview, it becomes clear that a large proportion of the cuts are sold for considerably less money. The total carcass will lose about €0,10 per kilo in value this week. Although there is continuous hope for an improving meat trade towards the summer months, nothing has come of it so far.

The number of slaughters in Germany last week stood at 772.033. The average slaughter weight decreased slightly and came to 97,8 kilos. Despite the historically tight supply, there is no positive movement in the market. The demand for pork seems to have shrunk along with the supply.

The German VEZG quotation remains unchanged at €1,80 per kilogram slaughtered weight. Tönnies and Vion also score unchanged at the same level. The quotations of the Dutch slaughterhouses are also falling this week after the price fall last week in Germany. Vion corrects with €0,07 to €1,79 (including VAT), Compaxo with €0,08 to €1,53 (excluding VAT) and Van Rooi with €0,07 to €1,56 (excluding VAT) .).
