Dairy consumption in China is picking up quickly. In 2021, average consumption rose by 10,6% to 14,4 kilograms, according to figures from the Chinese dairy industry association. The increase is a result of increasing prosperity. Meat consumption is also picking up.
Increasing prosperity means that Chinese people have more to spend. This higher expenditure is mainly spent on the consumption of animal proteins. The consumption of meat and poultry even increased by 20,5% to an average of 45,2 kilos. Unlike dairy, meat has been one of the main components of the meal in China for many years. Traditionally, pork has been particularly popular, but the consumption of beef and poultry is rapidly gaining ground. Dairy consumption has traditionally been less common, but is now growing.
The Chinese government encourages additional dairy consumption by emphasizing its health benefits. The guideline is 300 grams per day. China's dairy industry is anticipating growth by developing products that match the Asian country's food cultures. The Chinese dairy industry also says it is working on improving sustainability, which appeals to many consumers.
