German slaughterers now don't want extra ITW pigs

18 May 2022 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

German pig slaughterhouses currently have no need for additional pigs that meet the requirements of Initiative Tierwohl (ITW). Over the past six months, there has been plenty of demand for animals ready for slaughter that met these criteria, but the supply now exceeds the placement options.

Demand for meat from the ITW chain was high last year. Many supermarkets mainly filled the fresh meat shelves with pork that met the ITW conditions. At the beginning of this year, the demand for ITW pigs was greater than the supply, which meant that allowances were paid left and right on top of the standard 'plus' for ITW animals. A spokesperson for the Tönnies slaughterhouse explains to German media that the supply due to new entrants is now too large. The weak demand for pork may also play a role.

Possible space with new customers
The spokesperson for ITW Germany confirms the current situation. However, he sees opportunities for new suppliers if new buyers ask for ITW pigs. It would especially help if large companies and catering chains were to join. Currently, approximately half of the pigs slaughtered in Germany meet the ITW conditions, approximately 25 million pigs.
