African swine fever continues to spread in Germany. The virus was found on a fattening pig farm near the German-French border in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut announced this yesterday (May 25). It concerns a case at a small fattening pig farm with 35 animals in the municipality of Emmendingen. It marks the first case of African swine fever in southern Germany and the province of Baden-Württemberg.
Pigs have been dying since May 19
The Ministry of Agriculture has now confirmed the outbreak. In a statement, they state that several pigs have died on the farm since 19 May (last Wednesday). The company was cleared by the authorities yesterday morning (Wednesday 25 May). It is currently unclear how the company could have become infected, although the ministry assumes that the introduction took place through human action.
