Although a price increase is not in sight, the pig market is making a better impression than in recent weeks. A price increase seems to be a matter of patience, although it also requires a bit of luck.
The floor under the pig price has hardened reasonably well. There is currently no direct price pressure. Slaughterhouses also make less noise than they initially did. The German pig price is currently €1,80 per kilo and historically that is not bad. With the sky-high feed costs, it is below cost price in many places. Not to mention the piglet prices.
Broken weeks of slaughter are almost behind us
Increasing benefits are not unrealistic to expect, but not in the very short term. It seems to be a matter of patience. The broken weeks of slaughter are almost over. In the short term, the second day of Pentecost awaits, after which the 'obstacles' will have disappeared. Add to this the fact that the pig supply decreases seasonally and a clearer market is on the horizon. Looking at the figures, there are relatively few pigs in Europe. In Germany in particular, slaughter figures have fallen significantly.
An increase in the price of pork also requires some luck. In the sense that the weather should be good. Now that export demand outside Europe is failing, the market has to rely on sales within Europe. A good barbecue season can give the price the desired incentives. For that we have to wait for summer weather in Northwestern Europe. It will be downright cold for this time of year in the coming days, but temperatures may increase later in June.
An increase in June seems a certainty
Historically speaking, a rise in pork prices in June seems to be a certainty. In recent years, pig prices have always increased - to a greater or lesser extent. Traders also sketch, albeit cautiously, an improved market picture. Pigs ready for slaughter are somewhat easier to place. Meat prices are currently moving sideways. The DCA Exchange Price 2.0 also remains unchanged. The quotation for slaughtered pigs remains unchanged at €1,64 per kilo and the price of live pigs remains at €1,30.
