Stable price highest attainable on pig market

6 July 2022 - Stef Wissink

The pig market has clearly lost its positive undertone in the past two weeks. Where there was hope for a significant advance of the pig quotations, an unchanged quotation is now the highest achievable.

Most of the positivity had already faded from the market last week and the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in pig-dense areas in Germany has not helped the situation. It is not the case that there are strong direct negative consequences, but buyers and processors of pigs are somewhat more careful. At the same time, pig farmers want to deliver smoothly left and right, to avoid the problem of full stables in the event of a possible outbreak of ASF.

Tame holiday season
In addition, the start of the holiday period ensures that the demand for pigs for slaughter is somewhat tamer. Reportedly, not all slaughterers will be slaughtering at the highest possible pace in the coming weeks. Demand from Germany is also very quiet.

The impulsive meat trade is certainly partly to blame for the quiet market development. The DCA changes in pork parts show that all parts are unchanged after the small gains of recent weeks.

Meanwhile, slaughter numbers in Germany remain low. Last week, 771.000 pigs were processed with an average weight of 96,9 kilos. This meant that both the numbers and weights were at a comparable level to the previous week.

The German VEZG quotation is €1,85 per kilo of carcass weight, as do Tönnies and Vion.
