The German government will financially compensate pig farmers for the financial damage caused by the war in Ukraine. A pig farmer can receive a maximum of €15.000 in support money. Due to the persistently low yields, this is a welcome addition to the current account of the entrepreneurs.
The support measures are part of a greening program for the agricultural sector. A total of €180 million has been made available for this purpose. Fatteners receive an average of €100 per 125 fattening pigs. Multipliers pay €31 per 100 piglets and €97 per sow place. The support per company is limited to €15.000.
The amounts mentioned are relatively not high in relation to the negative margins at the moment, but it is nevertheless a welcome addition. The payout will start from mid-August, German agricultural media write. The German government refers to market disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine as the reason for the aid. This is striking, because the war does not directly affect the European pig market. The negative margins in the sector have been around for much longer.
