US pig export shows cautious progress

20 July 2022 - Wouter Baan

The US pork export figures for May were the best so far in 2022. Neighboring Mexico in particular imports large volumes. At the same time, the Chinese drop in demand is large. This is according to figures from the American Meat Federation for Export (USMEF).

In May, the US meat industry exported 183.000 tons of pork. This is the highest monthly volume this year so far, but at the same time 20% less than the same month last year. Neighboring Mexico imported just under 70.000 tons, making it by far the largest sales market. Export volumes to the South American country are expected to increase further in the coming months. This is because Mexico has recently eased import duties on pork to keep food inflation down.

Exports to Japan fell by 9% in May to 35.000 tons. The underlying fell in the same order of magnitude to $651.000. This means that the export value is still above that of Mexico, which imports double the volume. This is because Japan mainly buys luxury meat parts and not so much by-products. Sales to China (including Hong Kong) are in stark contrast to last year. The export volume of 15.500 tons is 73% lower than in May last year. European exporters are also noticing the consequences of the Chinese drop in demand.
