German pig price does not yield to slaughterhouse pressure

20 July 2022 - Wouter Baan

The German pig price (VEZG) will remain stable this afternoon and will therefore not give in to the pressure that the large slaughterhouses have been exerting for a week. What is going on in the market?

The VEZG quotation remains at €1,85 per kilo. This means that the quotation does not bow to the pressure from slaughterhouses such as Vion and Tönnies, which have been using a Hauspreise that has been 10 cents lower since last Wednesday. Past history shows that this imbalance can last a few weeks. Either the VEZG rating drops, or the slaughterhouses increase their purchasing prices again. On Wednesday afternoon it was not yet known how slaughterhouses would respond with their pricing to the stable mutation of the VEZG.

The market situation has neither improved nor deteriorated compared to last week. The pig supply is described as tight, partly due to little supply from the Netherlands. At the same time, the appetite for slaughter is not great. Last week the slaughter figure remained at 734.260, almost 10% less than the same week last year. Meat prices are moving steadily. The beautiful summer weather is not yet generating much demand for barbecue products.
