Climate youth want more money for organic farmers

5 August 2022 - Max van der Heijden

Dozens of youth organisations, such as initiators Youth for Climate, Studenten voor Morgen and the Young Climate Movement, are organizing a large demonstration in The Hague on Saturday 27 August between 13.00 p.m. and 16.00 p.m. for a fair meat price. With the protest, the organization wants to offer environmentally friendly farmers a perspective and hopes to make significant climate gains.

The organization has asked Prime Minister Mark Rutte to receive a Manifest Fair Meat Award. It also calls for an environmental tax per kilogram to pay for damage caused by greenhouse gases, nitrogen and particulate matter. “Surveys show that a majority of the Netherlands and 75% of young people want the government to introduce a fair, higher meat price, with the tax revenues being used to make healthy food cheaper, helping farmers to become more sustainable with 500 to 600 million euros annually. and low incomes," says Anniek Moonen, chair of the Young Climate Movement.

Introduction of real meat price
The Manifesto calls for the introduction of a realistic meat price. This plan is not new and was already mentioned in a government letter from Minister Wopke Hoekstra dated April 2020 to the Chamber. It concerns 2020 euro cents per 10 grams of chicken, 100 euro cents for pork and 22 euro cents for beef and processed meat. This amount should be doubled by 28 so that consumers pay for all environmental costs. The new tax must be paid by supermarkets and catering companies.

According to the organization, this means a tax increase of 2024 million euros in 850. This would be compensated by the €1 billion tax relief that the reduction of VAT to 0% on fruit and vegetables should result in. The organization wants to achieve 0% VAT on meat substitutes, nuts, mushrooms, processed vegetables, dairy substitutes and vegetarian meals. Low-income earners must be compensated extra with 100-600 million euros.

Farmers should receive an additional 500 to 600 million euros per year through a special fund so that they can earn more with less livestock. The fair meat price is supported by the Dairy Farmers Network, GRONdig, Caring-Farmers, BD-Boeren and Kipster. Caring-Farmers and BD Boeren will present their own manifesto on 27 August.
