European pork sought after in Korea and Japan

22 August 2022 - Wouter Baan

With the exception of China, the sales of European pork on the most important markets show big pluses. Sales to Japan, for example, rose by almost 50% in the first half of this year. South Korea also imports considerably more. However, this is not enough to compensate for the damage.

In the first half of this year, European pork exports fell by 24,7% to 2,2 million tons compared to the same period last year, according to figures from Eurostat. A sharp drop that has been noticeable in the sluggish market demand in recent months. However, when we zoom in on the export figures, positive developments are also visible.

Except for a sharp decline in exports to China (-60% to 676.000 tons), sales on almost all other markets show major pluses. For example, sales to the Philippines rose by 36,8% to 253.000 tons. Sales to Japan increased by 45% to 253.000 tons. 247.000 tons of pork were shipped to South Korea, an increase of no less than 65%.

Rise in Ukraine
It is also striking that Australia and the United States import considerably more European pork. Just like Ukraine, which increased imports by 59% to 58.000 tons. This increase is remarkable, given that the country has been at war with Russia since the end of February.

Of all European member states, the Netherlands managed to limit export damage the most. Sales fell in the first 6 months of this year by 19% to 336.000 tons. This makes the Netherlands the third largest exporter. Spain lost 31% to 645.000 tons. The Danish export figure fell by 28% to 285.000 tons. Germany lost 42%, bringing the export volume to 114.000 tons.
