Pig price releases the gas after revival

26 August 2022 - Wouter Baan

The pig price has picked up considerably in recent weeks. An upturn that was not directly predicted and is therefore a nice windfall for the primary sector. While conditions are still positive, the market must now slow down.

For the third time in history, the German pig price has crossed the €2 mark. The VEZG quotation has even advanced to € 2,05 per kilo and thus has a new record established. Due to high inflation and the rallies in the commodity markets, this is not necessarily big news, but worth mentioning. After the prices of beef and poultry had already broken records earlier this year, the price of pigs has also improved in recent weeks.

Offer a little less tight
The market is supported by a tight supply of pigs, which is particularly evident in Germany. The shrinkage of the pig population has been exacerbated in recent weeks by the slowdown in growth due to the hot weather. In the meantime, the temperatures have normalized and the supply is increasing again. This also fits the seasonal pattern. In the Netherlands, the pig supply is well-organized. The slaughter figure has now been below the limit of 300.000 pigs for seven weeks in a row.

With the end of the holiday season, the meat processing industry starts up again. In addition, the retail and food service channels are in need of larger volumes. Meat exports outside Europe are also not disappointing. However, the danger of overheating is lurking, Tönnies warns. Other slaughterhouses also indicate that it is not wise to overextend the market. A boomerang effect then threatens when autumn approaches. Earlier this year, the spring revival was also punished.

DCA Benchmark Price - Pigs
Many traders realize that the pig price cannot continue to take major steps and therefore opt at DCA Markets for an unchanged movement to a very small plus of the Stock Price. Others sometimes argue for a larger increase. Based on the statements, the DCA Fair Price 2.0 for pig carcases will increase by €0,01 to €1,93 per kilo. The price of live pigs increases in the same order of magnitude to €1,53 per kilo.
