The German pig price will not drop any further today (October 5). For pig farmers, this can be seen as a windfall in a market that is running smoothly.
The German pig price (VEZG) is holding steady at €2 per kilo, after having to lose €0,10 last week. This reduction took a hit to sentiment in the sector. It was briefly feared that a second reduction would occur, but that has not happened. However, the storm has not yet passed, because the signals from the meat market are still far from positive.
Meanwhile, the pig supply is showing a seasonal increase. This is reinforced by the cancellation of a slaughter day in Germany earlier this week (October 3, Day of German Unity). However, the wider offer is reportedly temporary. After all, approximately a quarter of the slaughter capacity in Germany has remained unused for months.
Distribution in the Netherlands
Pig prices are also falling in the Netherlands. It is striking that the slaughterhouse quotations show a fairly wide spread. For example, earlier this week Vion decreased by €0,04 to €1,84 per kilo (excluding VAT), while the Compaxo quotation fell by €0,07 to €1,74.
