The decline in pig and sow herds in the United States continues, according to the September census of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The US had 73,8 million pigs last month, a decrease of 1% from last year. The sow herd decreased in the same order of magnitude to 6,15 million. Compared to the July count, the pig herd did record a slight growth, but this may be influenced by seasonal effects.
The decline in the U.S. pig population has been going on since 2019. The decline is also reflected in the slaughter figures, which are about 1% to 2% below the level of last year.
