31 October 2022 - Wouter Baan

The stabilization of the pig price in the past week has been good for the piglet trade. In any case, the market has not deteriorated further. This applies to both domestic demand and sales in other countries such as Germany and Spain.

Moreover, export figures to Germany have fallen sharply in recent weeks, to below 50.000. Previously, such low numbers were not even achieved during the broken weeks surrounding the holidays. The numbers going to Spain have shown some recovery and have been above 30.000 again in recent weeks.

Market balance
Although trading is not smooth, there is a sense of market balance. The demand may leave much to be desired, but viewed in isolation the supply is not extensive either. Thus, after five price reductions in a row, the DCA BestPigletPrice may find a bottom at €42 per piglet this week. The German VEZG piglet price is stable again at €48, after a significant correction last week.

Historically, the DCA BestPigletPrice picks up again from week 46, that's almost it. Such a revival is not yet visible this year, but the market may surprise in the coming weeks. With regard to the pig price, the piglet quotations are relatively low valued, so there is some room for improvement. However, demand will first have to show a serious impulse.
