News Pig market

German pig price is also rising

23 November 2022 - Wouter Baan

It is clearly noticeable that the pig market is working towards Christmas. Following on from the DCA Beursprijs, Dutch slaughterhouses are raising the listing. The German pig price is also participating in the upswing.

After five stable movements in a row, the VEZG quotation increases this week by €0,05 to €1,95 per kilo. It is the first increase since mid-September, after which the market came under considerable pressure. With December approaching, there is room for increases again, also in the Netherlands. Following Vion, Compaxo and Van Rooi have also increased their listing. The other parties will probably also follow.

Tighter offer
A tighter pig supply is the basis of the Christmas revival. Intensive slaughter is taking place in the Netherlands in particular, as is evident from the slaughter figures, which have been well above 300.000 for weeks. Slaughter numbers are likely to remain high until the last week before Christmas. In Germany, 787.888 pigs were slaughtered last week. That is relatively high, judging by the plummeting slaughter figures this year.

Slaughterhouses are short of pigs to meet the increasing Christmas demand. The demand for the more luxurious meat parts is clearly picking up. This is evident, among other things, from the prices for hams becoming higher. More than in other years, pork consumption appears to be able to benefit from the high beef and poultry meat prices.
