The German branch of Vion will stop boning pigs in Landshut at the end of this year. The capacity will be transferred to the locations in Vilshofen and Crailsheim, also in southern Germany. With this, Vion anticipates the dwindling slaughter numbers in Germany.
The bundling of the deboning capacity stems from the shrinking pig numbers, Vion indicates. These have fallen considerably in recent years, mainly due to pig farmers stopping. A few years ago, the German slaughter figure regularly peaked above 1 million pigs, but nowadays about 750.000 pigs are slaughtered every week. This shrinkage has led to overcapacity.
Vion will continue to slaughter pigs in Landshut, which is located in the state of Bavaria. This is done in order not to extend the transport distances unnecessarily in the context of animal welfare. A social plan is being developed for the approximately ninety boners in Landshut. The approach here is to accommodate as many employees as possible at the other deboning locations, according to the statement of the meat company.
