Biggenprijs continues to take steps

12 December 2022 - Wouter Baan

Piglet prices continue to rise, despite the fact that pig prices have just leveled off. Friend and foe agree that the market can take another step this year and perhaps next week.

The high slaughter figures in recent weeks have exposed the shrinkage in the sow herd. An ample supply quickly turned into a shortage that is still noticeable. With the broken weeks around Christmas approaching, the tight supply will be temporarily camouflaged.

However, this is not yet the prelude to an equal piglet price this week, although the rate of increase is slowing somewhat. The German piglet price (VEZG) passes the €60 mark quite easily. Never before this year has the rating been so high. Just like in the Netherlands, piglets are also scarce in Germany. This is favorable for export opportunities from the Netherlands. However, the weekly export figure to Germany has recently fallen to below 50.000, which is probably also due to the tight supply.

Overall, the market momentum is good. The DCA BestPigletPrice will increase this week based on the declarations by €2,50 to €55 per piglet. This is the seventh price increase in a row.
