Vion lowers pig price, piglet price leveling off

27 December 2022 - Wouter Baan - 5 comments

The piglet market should take a step sideways in the last week of the year, although the market undertone remains positive. On the pig market, Vion's downward movement is striking.

In recent weeks, piglet prices have made significant gains, thanks to strongly improved demand. This good demand remains in force, but the placement space in the Netherlands is much smaller in these broken weeks. Export to distant destinations is also difficult to organize due to a lack of drivers.

As a result, there are now more than enough flocks available to meet the (export) demand. This situation results in an unchanged DCA BestPigletPrice at €56,50 per piglet. The German VEZG piglet quotations had previously leveled off at €61 per piglet. It is expected that piglet prices will resume their upward trend in early January, as is seasonal practice. However, fattening pig farmers are increasingly expressing resistance to the high prices.

Vion lowers listing
The fact that Vion lowers the pig price this week by €0,05 to €1,97 per kilo (including VAT) is an extra downer. The demand for meat has come to a complete standstill, which is the reason for the significant reduction, according to Vion. Whether the other slaughterhouses in our country will go along with this will have to be seen on Wednesday.
