The rapidly rising piglet market is clearly working towards its peak. Although the DCA BestPigletPrice is still rising this week, the market suspects that the high prices will soon fall back somewhat.
The piglet market at the end of February is still characterized by a scarce supply. However, demand is increasingly failing. Not only in the Netherlands, but also in the export markets of Germany and Spain. This can partly be explained by the seasonal pattern. In addition, the leveling off pig prices are dampening the mood in the piglet trade.
Solid market
The market is solid. The expectation is that the historically high prices will continue to hold, although the market is likely to slow down somewhat in the coming weeks, according to traders. Export-oriented traders in particular think so. Looking at historical market data, it is possible that the market will remain stable after the seasonal peak, as was the case in 2021, 2019 and 2018. Time will tell.
The German VEZG quotation for this week is already leveling off at a record level of €80 per piglet. The DCA BestPigletPrice is still increasing, by €1 to €75, which is also a record.
