Piglet price is also declining

3 April 2023 - Wouter Baan

After an unusual price increase last week, the piglet price is now decelerating. This is the case in both the Netherlands and Germany.

The rising piglet quotations last week were directly linked to higher pig prices. However, the pig market limited itself to one increase, which also closes the path to higher piglet prices. In addition, the piglet supply is somewhat wider this week.

With Easter approaching, a trading day is canceled. Apart from that, the supply of piglets is tight, which means there is a solid foundation to maintain the record high prices for a while, although this is not yet a piece of cake. Seasonally, the supply does increase again and fattening pig farmers also express considerable resistance. In addition, successful sales to Spain will slow down a few notches towards the summer months, as is often the case during that period.

Based on the statements, the DCA BestPigletPrice remains at €77 per piglet this week. The German VEZG piglet quotation had already been leveled off at €83 per piglet.
