Pig price rise nipped in the bud

12 May 2023 - Wouter Baan

For a moment, the pig price seemed to be ready for a renewed recovery, but the attempt from the pig trade was nipped in the bud by slaughterhouses. The market, meanwhile, has resigned itself to a sideways movement.

The pig market after Easter can be called boring. Prices move mainly sideways in Europe. The price increases that briefly hung over the market last week have already blown over. Slaughterhouses made it very clear that they would not tolerate increases and the trade seems to accept this. Based on current price levels, slaughterhouses cannot be blamed for paying poorly, but the appetite for higher prices nevertheless remains.

Loss of slaughter days
The pig supply is less tight due to the cancellation of slaughter days. After Ascension Day, the second day of Pentecost follows quite quickly. In other years this caused problems in the primary sector and sales suffered. Now it offers slaughterhouses some time to catch their breath from the hunt for pigs. Because it is now becoming clear that slaughterhouses are trying to outdo each other in order to be assured of sufficient raw materials.

There are few changes to be seen on the meat market. The tight supplies provide a stable bottom, but demand is not very wild. Export demand outside Europe is also calm, with the volumes shipped being limited according to insiders.

Stable Stock Price
The current situation makes the market predictable. Based on the statements, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 for slaughtered pigs remains at €2,25 per kilo. The price of live pigs is also stable at €1,78 per kilo. The German VEZG quotation remained at €2,33 per kilo on Wednesday.
