The German branch of Vion slaughtered considerably fewer pigs last year than the year before. In a market with rapidly shrinking animal numbers, Vion appears to be the most susceptible to this, according to an overview by interest group ISN.
The number of slaughters in Germany shrank by 9,2% last year to 47,1 million pigs. The top 10 largest slaughterhouses saw the number of slaughters fall by 8,2% to 38,6 million. The largest percentage shrinkage is visible at Vion. The number of slaughters at Germany's third largest pig slaughterhouse fell by as much as 17.% to 6,51 million. This means that Vion is shrinking much faster than the market.
With a contraction of 10,3%, Westfleisch, the second largest slaughterhouse in Germany, is also facing a significant contraction. Market leader Tönnies is doing slightly less poorly with a decline of 7,5%. It is striking that Danish Crown saw the number of slaughters increase slightly last year.
