Pig price cast in concrete

19 May 2023 - Wouter Baan

The mood on the pig market has been more or less the same for weeks. Moreover, it does not look like this will change any time soon.

The pig market is in a dull period, but few in the sector are bothered by this. The record high prices offer pig farmers relief to cover costs. Slaughterhouses, in turn, are satisfied, as long as purchasing prices do not increase further. Further down the chain, there is some grumpiness among deboners and sausage makers, but the tight supply does not give these parties a leg to stand on.

Due to the broken weeks, the supply is currently wider, but many traders are able to complete the planning without any problems. The shortage will probably become more visible after Pentecost, especially if the supply also decreases seasonally.

Meat markets stable
There are also few changes to be seen on the meat markets. Sales of fresh products are calm this spring, due to the cold spring weather. The weather seems to be improving in the coming weeks, so this may give sales a boost. Sales of frozen by-products outside Europe are also calm. This is because China does not import large volumes. Another factor is that Europe scores unfavorably from a price point of view compared to Brazil and the United States.

All in all, there are no reasons to change the pricing. Based on the statements, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 for slaughtered pigs remains at €2,25 per kilo. The price of live pigs is also stable at €1,78 per kilo.
