Pig prices have been an unguided projectile for slaughterhouses for some time now. Whenever the market picked up, slaughterhouses had to follow and make up. Thanks to a clear statement from Van Rooi Meat earlier this week, the sector now seems to have realized that the top could well have been reached.
We have written several times that slaughterhouses are certainly not in control of the market in recent months. The recent price rally is experienced as a war of attrition, especially for the slaughterhouses in Germany. However, due to an extremely tight supply, pig prices continued to rise to higher levels, but the cake seems to have run out. This is increasingly becoming apparent to producers and pig traders.
This is mainly due to the change at Van Rooi Meat, which disruptively did not increase on Wednesday. Probably because they think that every extra cent will haunt them all summer long. The statement makes a noticeable impression. The idea is that Van Rooi is a slaughterhouse that does not just do things and sometimes does something extra. This means that the action can also count on respect somewhere. Westfort and Pali Group received half of the DCA Exchange Prize, while Compaxo and Vion fully gained.
Supply continues to be tight
After an exciting period, a period of rest will probably begin. The holidays had already started in Germany and this weekend the first region in the Netherlands will also receive leave. The outflow of consumers abroad will not benefit meat consumption. Moreover, there is no persistent BBQ weather coming either. Price pressure is not imminent due to the tight supply, although slaughterhouses will not miss the opportunity when the moment presents itself. The offer will have to be much broader. With 258.148 slaughtered in our country last week and fewer than 700.000 pigs on the hook in Germany, the supply is extremely tight.
Based on the statements, the DCA Stock Exchange price remains at €2,41 per kilo, while the price of live pigs is €1,91.
