German pig price is also suffering serious damage

2 August 2023 - Wouter Baan

Following the price pressure that has arisen in the Netherlands, the German market is now also moving downwards. And pretty loud too.

The German pork price (VEZG) drops by 10 cents to €2,40 per kilo. It is the first reduction since the fall. The reduction does not come as a surprise, as there were already clear signals that the German market was about to recover. Slaughterhouses will willingly follow the VEZG movement.

Despite tight supply
The tight supply appears to be unable to provide any counter pressure. With fewer 700.000 pigs slaughtered in the past week, supply remains persistently tight. Although the reduction was expected, it is certainly not pleasant. The German market is now suddenly falling faster than the prices in the Netherlands. This can also lead to additional price pressure.

As expected, Dutch slaughterhouses are also making further reductions today, but the bottom may not yet have been reached. It can safely be concluded that the market is currently in turbulent waters. As long as the holiday period continues, this situation seems to persist.
