German pig price raises barrier against price declines

23 August 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

The German producer association VEZG keeps the pig price in Germany the same for this week. With this, the influential organization puts a dam against the series of price reductions in recent weeks.

The Dutch slaughterhouses Compaxo and Van Rooi are still participating in the price reductions today (Wednesday, August 23). They dropped their prices this week by €0,04 cents per kilo. Whether the stable step by the German organization will help remains to be seen in the coming days. The VEGZ notes a slightly lower pig supply than last week: 264.500 compared to 207.700 heads last week.

The difference with last week is that this week there is an extra working day (last week there was a free Catholic holiday in Germany) and more can be slaughtered. This is also the case in many other Catholic European countries. Moreover, more and more consumers are returning to a normal rhythm of life. The holidays are over or coming to an end. In most cases, this also means higher meat consumption.
