Pig prices in the Netherlands seemed to have bottomed out, but this week abattoir quotations show that the downward pressure is still lingering.
Vion reduced the price on Monday by €0,02 to €2,34 per kilo (including VAT), based on very weak demand and price pressure on slaughter by-products. The market leader is thus setting the tone that other slaughterhouses, including Van Rooi and Compaxo, are following by reducing costs in the same order of magnitude.
German market
In Germany, price pressure is off the market, as the VEZG quotation remains at €2,30 per kilo for the third week in a row. In the background, German slaughterhouses are putting pressure on prices, which is leading to red figures on the slaughter sow market. The strikes at Vion last Monday did not cause major market disruptions. The negotiations between the slaughterer and the NGG union will continue on Thursday, September 7.
