Pork stocks in Germany halved

4 September 2023 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Meat stocks in Germany are getting smaller and smaller. Stocks have been at a low level all year, but they have now halved.

In July, only 74.000 tons of pork were stored in German cold stores. In July 2022, stocks were more than two and a half times as full. At that time, 189.000 tons were stored. Even then, stocks seemed quite meager, because in 2021 there were still 259.000 tons stored in German cold stores.

Longer trend
Since May 2022, there has been a significant decline in pork reserves. In fact, there is almost a straight line downwards. Only in January and April 2023 did stocks increase slightly again. If last year's figures are an indication, it is not a given that cold stores will become increasingly full again as production increases. Last year the utilization rate decreased from 189.000 tons in July to 96.000 tons in December.

The low utilization of storage capacity is also visible over a longer period. On average, the volumes in the cold stores are a lot lower than in previous years. To date, the cold stores have been filled with an average of 90.000 tons. In 2022 the average filling was 204.000 tons and in 2021 the figure was still 188.000 tons.
