African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to spread. The virus has been found among seven dead wild boars in Sweden. For the time being, infections have not occurred at Swedish pig farms.
The boars were found in Fagersta, 200 kilometers northwest of Stockholm. The find is remarkable, because boars were found far from the distribution area of the virus. It is not yet known how ASF arrived in Sweden. Given the distance, human-to-animal contamination is the most likely scenario, Swedish researchers indicate.
The current distribution area currently runs from Poland and Germany to Italy. Pig farmers in the northwest of the Balkans are particularly affected by the virus. The epicenter of infections in wild populations, on the other hand, is in Poland, where researchers have already found more than 1.000 infected pigs.
