The German meat group Tönnies has ambitions in Africa. Plans are in place to start an abattoir in Namibia for the slaughter and processing of cattle and pigs.
Owner Clemens Tönnies recently visited the African country, including a visit to the president of Namibia. He is enthusiastic about the German meat company's plans to open a slaughterhouse in the African country. However, the investment must contribute to reducing high youth unemployment.
If Tönnies actually gains a foothold in Africa, it will be a remarkable step. So far, in addition to its German home market, the company is physically located in European countries such as Denmark, France, Poland and the United Kingdom. In addition, Namibia is a relatively small country in terms of animal numbers, compared to other African countries. It is a relatively stable country.
A few years ago, Tönnies had bigger plans outside the EU, in Russia. However, the activities there were divested again in 2021.
