The pig market is on a stable course heading into autumn

15 September 2023 - Wouter Baan

The price pressure on the Dutch pig market has finally faded into the background. However, from now on the market will have to do without the barbecue question, as the grilling season is almost over.

Dutch slaughterhouses had no surprises in store this week and, with the exception of Compaxo, kept the quotations unchanged. The German market has been trading at €2,30 per kilo for weeks, while there is still price pressure in Spain and Denmark. The Belgian market, on the other hand, is also moving stably, which means that price pressure on the Northwest European market is no longer an issue. At this moment, because slaughterhouses continue to create some mood in the background.

The market picture does not differ much from recent weeks. The pig supply increases seasonally, but is broadly in line with demand. Incidentally, the Dutch slaughter figure of 287.847 pigs took a step back last week. Meat sales in Europe are moderate to weak, as is the export demand from Asia due to the economic crisis in China.

On the other hand, frozen stocks are low. This prevents the market from being tense. Yet slaughterhouses are reluctant to build up stocks, for fear of renewed price pressure. The chance of impulses from an increasing barbecue demand is becoming smaller by the day now that autumn is just around the corner. However, this question has not been wild in recent weeks.

DCA Scholarship Award
Although the market is currently stable, it does not seem likely at the outset that this price picture will continue in the coming weeks. The market is often in flux during seasonal transitions, and sentiment can go in either direction. For next week, however, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 will take a step sideways. The quotation for slaughtered pigs remains at €2,20 per kilo. The price of live pigs remains at €1,74 per kilo.
