German pork price is still going up

20 September 2023 - Wouter Baan

While Dutch pig prices have fallen in recent weeks, the market in Germany has managed to remain stable. It now appears that the pressure on German pork prices is still too much.

The VEZG quotation drops by €0,05 to €2,25 per kilo after five stable weeks. This is the lowest levels since February. The cause of the price correction lies in weak meat sales. This can partly be explained by falling beef prices, which makes pork relatively more expensive.

The pig supply is also showing an upward trend. This is also evident from the slaughter figures that rose to 723.913 pigs last week. This is the highest level since mid-May. Nevertheless, supply remains historically tight.

The price reduction in Germany should not give immediate cause for further price corrections on the Dutch market. After all, the quotations here have already fallen back in recent weeks. Nevertheless, slaughterhouses continue to exert pressure. For the time being, it will not lead to further price pressure. Compaxo keeps the weekly price the same at €2,04 per kilo.
