Dutch piglet price holds firm

25 September 2023 - Wouter Baan

Despite lower pig quotations and price pressure on the German piglet market, the Dutch piglet price is moving sideways. Many pig traders are reluctant to tinker with the DCA BestPigletPrice. Why do they stand their ground?

The pig farming industry has been struggling with declining quotations for weeks. Both the pig and piglet quotations lost quite a bit of ground. Only the German VEZG piglet price has shown little or no concern for negative market sentiment in recent weeks and has remained stoically stable. Until last Friday. The quotation then followed the falling German pig price, with a drop from €2,50 to €77,50 per piglet.

Maintain confidence
With this knowledge in mind (and possible further falling pig prices in the offing), you could also expect price pressure on the Dutch piglet market. A number of traders are therefore cautiously opting for a limited decline, but the majority of contributors want to hold their ground. The idea is that a decline would not do any good to confidence in the market, just as demand is picking up again. Not only domestic demand, but also sales to major customers such as Spain and Germany are growing steadily every week, according to the latest export figures.

Based on the statements, the DCA BestPigletPrice remains at €61,50 per piglet. However, the average contribution is slightly below the level of the listing.
