The German pig price (VEZG) fell this afternoon by 10 cents to €2,10 per kilo. This is twice as large a reduction as last week, which not everyone in the market saw coming.
The reduction is in response to the downward trend that the large slaughterhouses in Germany have started with their Hauspreise. In addition to a slightly wider range, the price pressure is mainly due to persistently disappointing meat sales. Buyers on the European market are very cautious. On the world market, European slaughterhouses have no chance against the cheaper supply from Brazil and the United States.
The Netherlands
Slaughterhouse quotations in the Netherlands are also falling as expected. Compaxo and Van Rooi both reduced by 3 cents to €1,98 per kilo. This is the lowest level since January. It is currently difficult to predict when calm will return to the market. After all, price pressure has been going on for some time and seems to be increasing rather than decreasing.
