In 2022, the average German ate 52,1 kilos of meat per person per year. Based on current market trends, AMI expects consumption to drop to 2023 kilos in 49,5. Pork consumption in particular is lower. In 2023, consumption will decrease by about 6,3% from 28,5 kilos to 26,7 kilos.

Beef consumption fell by a similar percentage, but had less impact on meat consumption in absolute figures. In 2022, the average German consumed 9,9 kilos of beef per year. In 2023, AMI estimates consumption at 9,3 kilos, about 6% less. Poultry meat consumption fell much less rapidly. In 2022, the average consumption was 11,4 kilos. In 2023, AMI expects consumption to drop 1,8% to 11,2 kilos.

Ten-year perspective
Compared to 2012, meat consumption has fallen sharply. That year, the average German still ate 62 kilos of meat. More than half of that was pork. Germans ate about 38,1 kilos of pork per year. The consumption of poultry and beef was the same at that time. In 2012, Germans ate 10,7 kilos of both types of meat.
