Brazilian pork exports increased by 2023% in 9,6. This has been established by the Brazilian Organization for Animal Proteins (ABPA).
More than 1 million tons of pork were exported between January and October. In October 2022, exports were approximately 924 million tons. The value of exports increased by 13,1% to $2,31 billion. Last year the value was $2 billion during the same period.
Chinese exports are falling
The ABPA estimates total exports for 2023 at 1,2 million tons. The most important export market remains China. In 2023, the Asian country imported 336.500 tons of pork, about 8% less than in the same period last year. This is a decline against the trend. This should not be surprising, since China got its own pork production back in order this year. At the beginning of the year, production was still relatively low, but production has now returned to a record level. Last year, Chinese pork production rose to 55 million tons and since that year, Chinese pork prices have fallen by 16,5%. A signal that demand has decreased compared to supply.
The loss is compensated by a significant growth in exports to other countries. Brazil has made significant progress, particularly in the field of exports to the rest of Asia. For example, exports to the Philippines increased by 40% to 101.300 tons and exports to Hong Kong grew by 23% to the same volume. Brazil also saw growth closer to home. Exports to Chile increased by no less than 47% to 69,1 million tons.
