Significantly more slaughters are also not affecting the pig market

8 December 2023 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

The demand for pigs ready for slaughter is there, as evidenced by the sharp increase in the slaughter figure last week. But despite this, the sentiment in the market remains calm and calm. Not what you would expect during December.

Slaughterhouses in the Netherlands are making haste with slaughter, as evidenced by the increasing slaughter figures. At 313.742 pigs, last week's slaughter figure was the highest since mid-January. It is striking that the weights also increase to an average of 99,9 kilos. This indicates that the pig supply is not excessively tight, and that is how traders experience it. Slaughterhouses indicate that supply is in line with demand. In Germany, the slaughter figure took a step back to more than 750.000.

Meat sales
At the meat market it is noticeable that Christmas is getting closer. The parts prices for pork tenderloins are rising sharply this week, according to figures from DCA. The bacon and cheeks were also traded slightly more expensively. The rest remained unchanged. All in all, the revival is not enough to achieve a higher valuation of the carcass. Heavyweights within the carcass such as hams, shoulder and ribs are unchanged. This is partly due to a large supply of meat from Spain, which weighs heavily on the European sales market.

In addition, demand is currently less wild than in previous December months. This may be because beef has been priced much more competitively in recent months, causing pork to suffer from competition. In addition, slaughterhouses or trading houses do not dare to stockpile meat for fear of a price drop in 2024.

Beursprijs
Hopes for a Christmas bonus have now been given up in the pig market. With current knowledge, pork prices appear to be able to bridge the festive period in a stable manner, although there are still some moods going on in the background. For next week, the DCA Exchange Price will once again remain at €2,08 per kilo for the slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs also remains stable at €1,65 per kilo.
