Pig prices can still counter pressure for the time being

22 December 2023 - Wouter Baan

After a stable period without a Christmas revival, the pig market now faces two difficult weeks. The question is whether the quotations can hold up, given that the supply is quite ample.

Despite the fact that the market has been moving sideways for more than two months, the market situation cannot necessarily be called boring. In recent weeks, the market has been in the grip of Christmas demand, although this did not result in higher prices. Now it is the difficult broken weeks that require attention.

Offer quite wide
The pig supply is quite extensive, traders indicate. Slaughterhouses also experience this and say that there will be significantly less slaughter. These are the usual scenes that suit the time of year, but nevertheless stir the market every year. In the past three weeks, the Dutch slaughter figure has consistently exceeded 300.000 pigs. Yet these high numbers have not prevented the current supply pressures. At the same time, the supply is also not over the top.

Meat sales are falling sharply now that the Christmas demand has been met. The meat processing industry is also in decline and is therefore in need of fewer raw materials. It cannot be ruled out that slaughterhouses will come up with a reduction in the pig price next week (or the week after), but for the time being the chance of unchanged quotations seems to be even greater.

DCA Scholarship price unchanged
The DCA Exchange Price therefore remains at €2,08 per kilo for the slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs also remains stable at €1,65 per kilo.
