After a few turbulent weeks, calm has returned to the pig market. Although sentiment still feels weak somewhere, the Internet stock exchange manages to surprise. The slaughter figures in the Netherlands are also decreasing again, although the average slaughter weight remains high.
The mood on the pig market at the moment is neither meat nor fish. The price pressure that gripped the market in mid-January is now no longer the case. At the same time, the demand for pigs remains limited. Slaughterhouses rely on weak meat sales opportunities, both in Europe and on the world market. The fresh market does appear to be picking up cautiously, but not nearly enough to stimulate pig prices.
Internet fair on the rise
The stable quotations are a logical consequence of the current market sentiment. From that context, however, it is striking that the Internet Exchange surprised today by increasing by €0,05 to €2,15 per kilo. This suggests that the market is not paralyzed, although it is unlikely that slaughterhouse quotations will start to move upwards any time soon.
Slaughter rates higher in Germany
Looking at the processing figures, it is striking that more is being slaughtered in Germany than last year for two weeks in a row. There has been a visible decline in recent years, but it now seems to have stopped. This is also consistent with the recent count of the German pig herd, where the decline had also stopped. In addition, many pigs from the Netherlands are sent to German slaughterhouses, due to the more favorable selling prices there. In the Netherlands, the slaughter figures are below the level of last year and since last week also below the level of 300.000. However, the weights are permanently high at over 102 kilos. A tight pig supply is therefore not yet immediately within reach.
DCA Stock price stable
For the time being, stable quotations seem most likely, in line with the trend that has already started. The DCA Exchange price for slaughtered pigs remains at €1,94 per kilo. The price of live is immediately at €1,54.
